Dr. Oidov Baatarkhuu

Professor of Medicine, Head of Department of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences and General Expert on Infectious Diseases of Ministry of Health, Mongolia

Professor Oidov .Baatarkhuu graduated from the Mongolian National Medical University and obtained his degree in Doctor of Medicine with commendation in 1994. He has received his PhD degree at the Postgraduate School, Health Sciences University of Mongolia in 2006. He is currently Professor of Medicine, Head of Department of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences and General Expert on Infectious
Diseases of Ministry of Health, Mongolia.

He has completed his postdoctoral Fellowship in Hepatology at the Department of Internal Medicine, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea between 2007-2008. He did second overseas Clinical Research Fellowship in Hepatology at the Department of Internal Medicine III, AKH Hospital, University of Vienna, Austria in 2012. Also currently he has completed as a Clinical Research Fellow in Hepatology at the Storr Liver unit, Westmead Millennium Institute for Medical Research, University of Sydney, Australia. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Laboratory, Melbourne, Australia in 2014.

Professor O.Baatarkhuu is an Executive Council Member of APASL, Member of CEVHAP, and President of the Mongolian Association for the Study of the Liver Diseases, Executive Director of the Mongolian Infectious Diseases Physicians, and Chairman of the Scientific Committee for the APASL-STC 2012 in Mongolia

Professor O.Baatarkhuu is a key investigator in more than 10 international and national trials on antiviral treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C.

He has been extensively involved in research in the fields of viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma and he is currently working on the natural history of hepatitis B and D in Mongolia.

Professor O.Baatarkhuu has published more than 120 international and local papers. He also has spoken nationally and internationally on viral hepatitis and chronic liver diseases including hepatocellular carcinoma.

Dr. A. Kadir Dokmeci

Emeritus Professor of Gastroenterology at the Ankara University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey

A.Kadir Dökmeci was born in 1948 at Ilgaz, Turkey.
He received his medical degree from the Ankara University School of Medicine (AUSM) in 1971 and qualified as a gastroenterologist in 1978. He has studied ultrasonography, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as well as clinical hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Chiba University School of Medicine in Japan as Prof. Okuda’s student from 1979 to 1981 for 2.5 years.
He had worked together with Dr. Masao Omata and Dr. Osamu Yokosuka in this period.
He was subsequently appointed as associate professor in 1982 and as a professor in 1988 and served as chief of Department of Internal Medicine and as a chief of Department of Gastroenterology at AUSM from 1993 to 2000.
Prof. Dökmeci has been a visiting professor at the Chiba University School of Medicine from 1988 to 1989 and at the University of California, Irvine in 2003.
He is founder and member of many national and international societies, including Turkish Society of Hepatobliopancreatology (serving as president), Turkish Society of Gastroenterology, and Turkish Association for the Study of the Liver, The Association of the Turkish and Japanese Universities, Turkish Society of Endoscopy, Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver.
He has received national and international awards in his carrier including Inohana Award given by Chiba University in 1999.
He has organized many medical congresses and international Sports competitions including 5th APASL STC in İstanbul and both International Figure Skating and Ice Hockey Competitions. Also he organized the 25th APASL Annual Conference 2015 in İstanbul.
He was elected as the President of APASL from 2014 to 2015.
He has contributed to editorials, reviews and book chapters.
He is in editorial board in various journals such as Hepatology International, Digestive Endoscopy and Turkish Journal of Gastroenterology. He was elected as a medical committee member and medical supervisor of International Ice Hockey Federation.
He published more than 100 papers in different journals.
A.Kadir Dökmeci is currently Emeritus Professor of Gastroenterology at the Ankara University School of Medicine and acting as the Past President of APASL. He is married and has 1 daughter.

Dr. Kwang-Hyub Han

Professor and chairman of Department of Internal Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine (YUMC) and director of Yonsei Liver Center, Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea

He graduated YUMC in 1979. He was the director and principal investigator of a 9-year project, “Clinical Research Center for Liver Cirrhosis,” granted from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Health Technology Planning.
He is a member of The Korean Academy of Science Technology.
He served as the president of Korean Association for the Study of the Liver and hosting president of Liver Week 2014 and 2015.
He was also the hosting president of APASL STC 2016 in Busan.
He was a founding co-chairman and hosting chairman of APPLE (Asia-Pacific Primary Liver Cancer Exert) meeting and served as the first president of APPLE association. At present, he is an executive committee member of APPLE and CEVHEP.
He is also serving as an associate editor of Liver Cancer, assistant editor of Hepatology International and an editorial board member of Journal of Hepatology.
He is the author of several book chapters on topics such as ‘hepatocellular carcinoma’, ‘Liver Cirrhosis, a practical guide of management’, as well as more than 400 articles.



Dr. Jinlin Hou

Professor Jin-Lin Hou is the Director and Professor of the Hepatology Unit and Department of Infectious Diseases, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University. Professor Hou joined the University Department of Medicine of Nanfang Hospital in July 1984.
Between 1993 and 1994, he received training in the Department of Medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, UK. Between 2000 and 2001, Professor Hou was a visiting Fellow at the Institute of Hepatology, London, UK.
He has been invited to deliver talks at both national and international liver conferences owing to his expertise in viral hepatitis. His current research interests include the clinical management of viral hepatitis and the molecular virology and immunology of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) infection.
Professor Hou has published more than 150 articles in both national and international journals, including Hepatology, Science, Journal of Immunology and Journal of Clinical Microbiology.



Dr. Wasim Jafri

Director, World Gastroenterology Training Center in Pakistan

Dr. Jafri is a very well-known Hepatologist/ Gastroenterologist in Pakistan and he has earned a great name in Pakistan and the region. After obtaining initial training in medicine and gastroenterology in the United Kingdom (UK) he was trained in Hepatology at the University of Miami, Florida working with Dr. Schiff. He introduced the art of gastroenterology and Hepatology in Pakistan when he returned back in 1987 and since then he is at the Aga Khan University in Karachi
Pakistan. Dr Jafri is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Member of the Royal College of Physicians United Kingdom, Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Fellow of the American College of Physicians and Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. He had been the Governor of the American College of Gastroenterology for Pakistan from 2012-2015. Dr Jafri is also the director of World Gastroenterology Training Center in Pakistan

He had been Chair of Medicine and the Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is currently heading the Department for Continuing Professional Education (DCPE) along with his clinical and other responsibilities. He has over 200 peer reviewed publications in gastroenterology and Hepatology which are referenced in national and international journals. At the AASLD he is a member since 2001 and has been supporting the special interest group of portal hypertension and fatty liver disease. He is also an active member of AGA, EASL, IASL, APASL, PSSLD, and PSG. He has been member and chair of several national and international conferences in various capacities and has been a guest faculty to several national and international meetings as a speaker /chair/moderator. His research work has been presented at the AASLD, EASL, APASL, AGA, and many other meetings in poster or oral presentations.

At the national level he had been the general secretary for Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology, Vice President of Pakistan Society of Hepatology, and Founding President of Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver and is currently the Patron of that Society. At the APASL he had been the part of the executive committee and is currently on its advisory panel. His name has appeared in almost all the important guidelines of APASL which include Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HCC, Variceal bleed and portal hypertension and liver fibrosis. He has also been part of WHO 2014 guidelines on chronic hepatitis C. He has also contributed to the national guidelines for hepatitis B and C in Pakistan. He was assistant editor of Hepatalogy International and is currently an editorial board member of this journal. Dr George Lau graduated from The University of Hong Kong in 1987, with support by the King’s Edward Scholarship. After graduation, he was trained in Internal Medicine and then specialized in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and obtained his fellowship from the Hong Kong College of Physician in 1995. He received his post-doctorial training in Hepatology at Stanford University from 1992-1994 (supported by Hong Kong-Stanford scholarship) and University College of London from 1998-1999 (supported by Royal College scholarship).

In 2002, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Consultant at the Department of Medicine, Queen Mary Hospital, The University of Hong Kong. At the same year, he awarded most understanding Youth in Hong Kong. In 2005, he became the Global Principal Investigator of pegylated interferon alfa-2a for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and his work led to the registration of pegylated interferon alfa-2a by the EU and US Food and Drug Administration in 2005 (published in the New England Journal of Medicine). Dr. Lau has more than 500 publications with citation of over 10,000. He has also been invited to give numerous lectures in Hepatology throughout the world. Dr Lau had been the Associate Editor for both Journal of Hepatology and Liver international, and is currently serving as reviewer for over 30 international journals. In 2006, he was promoted to full Professor and assistant Dean, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. He was admitted to Fellow of the Royal College of Physician (London) in 2006. He was also well respected by his peer in academic Hepatology and was elected as 19th President of the Asian Pacific Association of the Study Liver (APASL) in 2008-2009. With his contribution in the field, he is now life-member of the Steering committee of APASL. In 2015, he was made fellow of the American Association for the study of Liver Diseases. In 2016, he was awarded National Science and Technology Progress Award (State Science and Technology Prizes)- Technological Advancement in Chronic hepatitis B infection management (China). In his community work, Dr Lau has founded the Cheng Si-Yuan (China-International) Hepatitis Research Foundation in 1998 (http://www.csyfoundation.org). This foundation represents one of the largest non-profit organisation in liver diseases in Asia. In 2009, he founded and become Chairman of Humanity and Health Medical Group, Hong Kong. He was also Director and Consultant, Humanity and Health GI and Liver Center in Hong Kong. Dr. Shiv K Sarin

Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin obtained his M.B., B.S. degree with seven gold medals (1974), his MD in General Medicine (1978) from Rajasthan University, and his Fellowship in Gastroenterology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in 1981. He served at the G.B. Pant Hospital, University of Delhi in 1983, becoming the Director Professor and Head of Gastroenterology in 1997. He is currently the Senior Professor and Head, Department of Hepatology and Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. He is also the Director, WHO
collaborative center on Viral hepatitis and Liver Diseases at ILBS, New Delhi India. He serves as Adjunct Faculty, Molecular Medicine at JNU due to his deep interest and contributions to translational science.

During his academic career spanning 35 years, Prof. Sarin contributed immensely to the field of Hepatology. These include “Sarin’s Classification of Gastric Varices”; variceal band ligation as primary prophylaxis which was a landmark NEJM paper;. He defined new disease entities, portal biliopathy and acute and chronic liver failure His seminal contributions on liver regeneration using growth factors have the potential for providing non-transplant options to ACLF patients. He has more than 470 publications, helped develop 18 major guidelines and edited 13 books. He is the founding Co-Chief Editor of Hepatology International.

Prof. Sarin was privileged to mentor 86 fellows and 25 Ph.D. students, and 25 of these head or serve as teaching faculty, including many in the US. He started the APASL School of Hepatology and was instrumental in setting up a Dedicated Liver University, the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in India. ILBS was recently designated as the first WHO Collaborative Center globally in Liver Diseases.

Prof. Sarin has been bestowed with Padma Bhushan (third highest civilian award of the country) by the Govt of India. He is a member of all the three science academies of the country. He has been a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, the highest Award in Science in India, The World Academy of Medical Sciences International Prize, EASL International Recognition Award and ‘Most Distinguished Physician from India” from the American Association of Physicians of India, Fograty Fellowship of the NIH to work at University of Yale, and Senior Fellowship of the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science to work at Chiba, Japan.

He was instrumental in setting up the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), under the auspices of the Govt of Delhi. ILBS has been conferred the status of a Deemed-to be University by the Govt. of India and is the first dedicated ‘Liver University’, globally. ILBS has been designated as the first WHO Collaborative Center in the world in the field of Liver Diseases.

Prof. Sarin has shown leadership roles in being the President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Indian Association for the Study of the Liver, Asian Pacific Association of Liver (APASL) and Chairman Steering Committee of the APASL.

Prof. Sarin was nominated to lead the Medical Council of India (MCI) as the Chairman of the Board of Governors, 2010-2011. He developed the ‘Vision 2015’ document for Medical Education in India and had introduced far reaching reforms.

Jose D. Sollano, Jr., is Professor of Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Manila, the Philippines.

His major research interests include chronic hepatitis B and C, hepatocellular carcinoma, portal hypertension. He has published several original scientific works in peer-reviewed journals and is also a reviewer and/or member of the
Editorial Board of several international periodicals in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Hepatology.

He has been Faculty and/or Convenor of several Asian-Pacific Consensus Guidelines, including those on Chronic Hepatitis B, Chronic Hepatitis C, Portal Hypertension and Non Variceal Upper GI Bleeding.

Prof. Sollano is a Past President of the Asia Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL). He is also Past President of the Hepatology Society of the Philippines, Philippine Society of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy, as well as, the Philippine College of Physicians. He is a member of the Chronic Hepatitis B Global Guidelines Task Force of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO).

Seung Kew Yoon, MD is now a professor of the division of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Korea.
Dr. Yoon earned his MD at the Catholic University of Korea in 1985. He trained in Hepatology & Gastroenterology at Seoul St.Mary’s Hospital, The Catholic University of Korea from 1992 to 1994. He then subsequently trained as
research fellow in Molecular Hepatology Laboratory, MGH, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA from 1996 to 1998.
He has been principal investigator in several international multicenter researches on antiviral therapy against hepatitis virus B & C, and target therapy for HCC.
He holds scientific membership in numerous professional associations in Korea and is a member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), EASL and APASL. He served as a secretary general of Korean Association for the Study of the Liver (KASL) from 2013 to 2015. Also, He served as a secretary general of APASL STC 2016 in Busan. He works as a director of Liver Cancer Center in Seoul St,Mary’s Hospital and Catholic University Liver Research Center. He has published more than 200 authored and co-authored original articles on the viral hepatitis B and C, NASH, and HCC. He had also written chapter on molecular diagnostics of HCC in the textbook “Principles of Molecular diagnostics and personalized cancer medicine”

Ming-Lung Yu, MD, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor at the College of Medicine, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan. Professor Yu graduated from the College of Medicine at Kaohsiung Medical University in 1989 before going on to obtain a PhD from the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine in 2000. Professor Yu, a board-certified internist and gastroenterologist, is currently teaching at the Kaohsiung Medical University and Kaosiung Medical University Hospital where
he is holding the leading role of Hepatitis Center and Hepatobiliary section, Department of Internal Medicine. Currently, he is also a Visiting Professor at Liver Center, Division of Gastroenterology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, USA.
Professor Yu’s research interests in epidemiology and natural history of viral hepatitis have led him to publish more than 250 journal and review articles. Professor Yu has won numerous awards over his career in recognition of his research. In addition to his academic and clinical achievements, Professor Yu also holds various editorial roles with several scientific journals some of which include PLoS ONE, World Journal of Gastroenterology, and Korean Journal of Hepatology He also frequently serves as a reviewer for major international journals in medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, such as The Lancet, Gastroeneterology, Hepatology, Gut, Journal of Hepatology, Clinical Infectious Disease, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Thorax, Ontotarget, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Scientific Reports and Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Professor Yasuhiro Asahina studied medicine at Shiga University of Medical Science and graduated in 1988. Following this, he completed a clinical fellowship in Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital followed by a research fellowship at University of Connecticut Health Center in the USA and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, where he received his Ph. D. degree in Medical Science in 1996. Professor Asahina is currently a Professor at the Department of Liver Disease Control, Tokyo Medical Dental University (TMDU) since 2012.
Professor Asahina has published 270 scientific papers and 37 books, and has given 284 lectures in the area of his expertise as an invited speaker, symposiast, and panelist. He serves as a Council Board Member for Japan Society of Hepatology, a Council Board Member for Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, a Council Board Member for Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society, a Fellow of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, and an International Member for American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
His research interests are "Molecular mechanisms for viral hepatitis and hepatocarcinogenesis, and diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis and HCC ". He has many experiences of anti-hepatitis viral treatment, and molecular targeted therapy and radiofrequency ablation for HCC.

Dr. Nobuyuki Enomoto

Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, University of Yamanashi

Nobuyuki Enomoto, MD, is Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University of Yamanashi in Japan. He trained in Medicine at Tokyo Medical and Dental University since 1984, studied on HCV genotypes at Kanazawa Medical University and completed a PhD in Molecular Virology about the interferon sensitivity of HCV at Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 1996. He moved to Yamanashi from Tokyo in 2003.
Prof. Enomoto is now a board member of Japan Society of Hepatology. He has authored and co-authored a number of papers that have published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of liver diseases. He runs clinical researches studying the treatment of hepatitis and HCC as well as basic researches on HCV genetics with the next-generation sequencing technique.



Dr. Yoshikatsu Eto

Prof. Eto is currently a Director of Advanced Clinical Research Center, Institute of Neurological Diseases and Professor Emeritus, Jikei University School of Medicine. He served as a Professor and chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Director of DNA Institute for Medical Science and also Vice President, University Hospital, the Jikei University School of Medicine. Prof. Eto studied for more than 40 years in the field of lysosomal storage diseases and has left many
achievements. He also served as a President of Japan Pediatric Society for four years and also as a President of Japan Society of Inherited Metabolic Disorders for 7 years. He has been leading the research in Pediatrics in Japan. Internationally, he also serves as a Standing Committee Member of International Pediatric Association for 6 years and as a President of the 10th International Congress of Inborn Error of Metabolism, 2006, Tokyo. He contributed to the establishment of Asian Society of Pediatric Research (ASPR) and is also a founder of Japan Society of LSD. He published more than 350 English written peer reviewed papers. Currently, he has studying about clinical and basic research in LSD, particularly, Fabry disease, Pompe disease and genetic leukodystrophy including NPC and also iPS research in LSD, as well.

Biography
Etsuko Hashimoto is a professor of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Tokyo Women’s Medical University. She had the privilege of studying liver pathology under Professor Ludwig, who is a renowned pathologist at MAYO Clinic, from 1987 to 1991. Professor Ludwig is well known as he established the concepts and the definition of NASH. At present, her primary area of interest is in the field of NASH, specifically in elucidation of the characteristics of HCC in NASH, the risk of development of HCC, and strategies for management of NASH.

Professor Yoichi Hiasa was graduated with M.D. degree in 1990 from Ehime University School of Medicine, Ehime, Japan. Then he was graduated with Ph.D. degree in 1999 from Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine, Ehime, Japan. During the period of graduate school student, he worked and trained basic research in Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Sciences (head is Dr. Michinori Kohara), Tokyo, Japan. After obtaining the Ph.D. degree, he worked as
a post doctoral fellow under the laboratory of Dr. Raymond T. Chung at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. After going back to Ehime University, he worked as an assistant professor, lecturer and associate professor of the department of Gastroenterology and Metabology in Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine (professor is Dr. Morikazu Onji). In 2013, he was promoted as a chief professor of the department, and in 2015, was also promoted as a vice director of Ehime University Hospital. His research interests are hepatocellular carcinoma, viral hepatitis and lifestyle-related diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NASH). He now conducting several basic research, clinical research and epidemiologic research, and published in fields of molecular biology, immunology, diagnostic imaging, nutrition and epidemiology. Moreover, he is now managing international collaborating projects for viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. He would be expected as one of the young leaders of gastroenterology and hepatology in Japan.



Dr. Keisuke Hino

Keisuke Hino has been a Director of the Department of Hepatology and Pancreatology at Kawasaki Medical School, Kurashiki, Japan since 2008. He graduated from Yamaguchi University School of Medicine in 1982 and received PhD from Yamaguchi University in 1989. He was a research fellow in University of Glasgow, Institute of Virology from 1996 to 1997. He was a professor of Laboratory Sciences, Yamaguchi University Graduate School of Medicine from 2005 to 2008. Professor Hino has a long-term research interest in liver diseases
with a main focus on the area of Hepatitis C-host interactions. In particular, he has contributed major advances in the impact of HCV on iron metabolism, oxidative stress and mitochondrial function. He has published extensively in this area since 2000 and has published prominent papers in Nature Genetics, Gastroenterology and Hepatology. His most significant research accomplishment was his detailed study of the HCV on hepatic hepcidin production and iron accumulation. This landmark study published in two papers in Gastroenterology showed the direct effect of HCV on hepatocyte transcription of hepcidin and its impact on iron accumulation and hepatocellular carcinoma. This work was the first discovery of the mechanism behind association between hepatitis C and hepatic iron accumulation and showed the importance of this phenomenon to HCV-associated hepatic carcinogenesis. He plays leadership roles in the Japanese Society of Internal medicine, the Japanese Society of Hepatology and the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology. He is well acknowledged as one of the leaders of Hepatology in Japan and brings great perspective and experience to his International collaborations. He has been conducting the Research Program on Hepatitis from Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (16fk0210xxxh0001) since 2016. He has received many honors and awards including the Uehara memorial Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship Award and the Japanese Society of Hepatology Shering Plough Award.



Dr. Takafumi Ichida

Takafumi Ichida, MD was graduated from the Niigata University School of Medicine in 1975. After graduation, he continued to training on hepatology field at Free University of Brussel (E Wisse) in Belgium, Department of Cell Biology 1984 and Naylor Dana Cancer Institute at American Health Foundation (GM Williams) in New York, 1985. In 1991, he went abroad again in Pittsburgh Transplantation Center (T Starzl, S Iwatsuki, S Todo and DH Van Thiel) to learn and investigate the liver transplantation for the establishment of living and
deceased donor liver transplantation in Japan In 2004, he became Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of Juntendo University Shizuoka Hospital (Japan).He engaged management of both viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplantation. He is opinion leader of the field of liver transplantation in Japan.
In 2014, he became the Director of Shonan-East General Hospital at Kanagawa Prefecture. Now his practice is focused on education of hepatologist, management of patients of all kind of liver diseases, and he is still acting as a chairman of Evaluation Committee of Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation in Japan.

Dr. Namiki Izumi

Namiki Izumi is the President of Musashino Red Cross Hospital and Director of Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the hospital, as well as the invited professor of Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
He received his medical degree at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan. He served his residency in medicine and fellowship in the second department of Internal Medicine at the hospital of Tokyo Medical and Dental.
Namiki Izumi is an active board member of the Japanese Society of Hepatology, currently serving on the Guideline committee member of viral hepatitis and the social insurance committee as chairman.
In 2014, He served as the president for 50th anniversary meeting of Japan Society of Hepatology in Tokyo.
He is also an active board member of the Japanese Association for Liver Cancer, currently serving on the Guideline committee member of hepatocellular carcinoma.
He has served as Chief Investigator of study groups funded by Japanese Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor (MHLW) for clinical study of viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma and data mining analysis for chronic hepatitis C.

Dr. Tatsuo Kanda

Tatsuo Kanda received a medical degree in 1991 at Niigata University School of Medicine, Japan, and participated in First Department of Internal Medicine, Chiba University, School of Medicine. Tatsuo Kanda received his PhD in 1999 at Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. He had post-doctor training for 3 years under Prof. Ratna Ray and Prof. Ranjit Ray at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO, USA. In Dec. 2008, Tatsuo Kanda became a Tenure-
track Associate Professor at Department of Medicine and Clinical Oncology, Chiba University, Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. In Feb. 2013, Tatsuo Kanda was nominated a permanent Associate Professor at Department of Gastroenterology and Nephrology, Chiba University, Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. For ~25 years, he has focused his scientific interests on the topics related to liver diseases including acute liver failure, viral hepatitis and autoimmune liver diseases, and worked with Prof. Osamu Yokosuka. Tatsuo Kanda is also an expert for hepatitis A virus (HAV), HBV and HCV, and translation and replication of these viruses, and hepatocarcinogenesis. With his expertise in antiviral therapies and hepatitis virus research, Tatsuo Kanda also sees a lot of patients in clinical daily practice. Tatsuo Kanda has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed Journals such as Hepatology, Journal of Virology and Cancer Research. Tatsuo Kanda also participated in the APASL working party for HCV guidelines.



Dr. Shuichi Kaneko

Dr. Shuichi Kaneko has been a Professor of the Department of Gastroenterology, Kanazawa University Hospital from 2004. He received his MD in 1982 and PhD in 1986 from Kanazawa University. He had served as a Visiting fellow of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA from 1987 to 1989 and a Visiting professor of University of Southern California, USA from 1993 to 1995. He is a Visiting professor of Sichuan University from 2007.
His research interests are liver diseases with a main focus on viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Dr. Kaneko was a President of the 48nd Annual Meeting of Japan Society of Hepatology in 2012. He has been a Board member of directors of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology from 2011. He was promoted as a professor of Osaka City University Graduate School of Medicine in 2007. His research interests are biology of stellate cells, liver fibrosis, and carcinogenesis. He is a reviewer and member of editorial board of several scientific journals. Prof. Kawada was Visiting Scientist, Department of Hepatology, Florence University in 2004, and from 2015, he is a visiting Professor of University College London (UCL). Dr. Makoto Nakamuta

Dr. Makoto Nakamuta is Director of Center for Liver Diseases, Kyushu Medical Center, National Hospital Organization, Fukuoka, Japan. He is also a councilor of the Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH), and an associate editor of Hepatology Research (the offical jounal of JSH). He was graduated from Kyushu University with MD in 1984. After two years’ residency at Kyushu University Hospital, he entered Kyushu University Graduate School of Medicine, and obtained PhD in 1990. After receiving advanced clinical training, he spent three and a half year
as a research associate and subsquently as an instructor at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston TX, US from 1993 to 1996 where he investigated molecular biology of lipid metabolism, particularly ApoB editing. Since then, he has dedicated to lipid and glucose metabolism in liver diseases including NAFLD/NASH, viral hepatitis, and PBC. His recent research interest is roles of “multiple organ crosstalk” in steatosis among liver, pancreas (insulin and glucagon), brain (appetite center), adipose tissue (adipokine), muscle (myokines), and colon (microbiota). He is also intrigued by Sirtuin (NAD mtatolism) and bile acid metabolism (FXR and TGR5). He is basically a clinical physician and he always engages in clinical and basic research with an eye to clinical application.

Dr. Shuhei Nishiguchi is a Professor of the Department of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Disease, Hyogo College of Medicine, Hyogo, Japan, since 2005, and a Vice-President of Hyogo College of Medicine since 2013. He received his MD (1981) and PHD (1985) in Medicine from Osaka City University. He spent one year as a research fellow in Salk Institute, La Jolla CA under the instruction of Dr. Renato Dulbecco who won the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for
his work on oncoviruses. He has authored over 400 peer-reviewed papers, has edited 5 books, and holds many patents. Prof. Nishiguchi has been associate Editor for Hepatology Research, Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences, and Liver International. He is a director of the Japan Society of Hepatology, Japanese Society of Clinical Nutrition, and the Japanese Society of Interferon Cytokine Research, and Japanese Medical Society of Alcohol and Drug Studies. Hideyuki Nomura, MD is the chief of the Center for Liver Disease, Shinkokura Hospital. Dr Nomura is the leader of KULDS (Kyushu University Liver Disease Study Group). KULDS is one of the largest clinical study groups for hepatitis C therapy (interferon or DAAs) in Japan. Dr. Masao Omata

Masao Omata, MD, has made an effort to revitalize the APASL (Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver) with Dr. S. Sarin and others for the last 10 years. He is a Co-Editor in Chief of the Hepatology International, an official journal of APASL. He graduated from Chiba University School of Medicine (Dr. Okuda), and continued his training at Yale University (Dr. G. Klaskin) and in the Liver Unit at University of Southern California (Dr. R.L. Peters). After 6 years in US, he returned to the Department of Medicine at Chiba University in 1989, and
started molecular biological study on Hepatitis B virus. In 1992, he became Chairman of Second Department of International Medicine at University of Tokyo, Japan and then subsequently became chairman of Department of Gastroenterology. Under his leadership, the Department of Gastroenterology had become one of the foremost centers in its field.
Now, he is the president of the two hospitals at Yamanashi, west of Tokyo, where, although scenic place with Mt. Fuji, hepatitis virus infection is epidemic and his homeland. He and his colleague have published 1,141 articles in English Literature including, NEJM 5, Lancet 6, Ann Int Med 6, Hepatology 59, Gastroenterology 43. The total impact factor is 6,439 and 43,025 citations with H-index of 105 as of July 1, 2016.

Dr. Shinji Shimoda

Associate Professor Shinji Shimoda was graduated with M.D. in 1989 from Kyushu University, Japan. Dr. Tetsuo Takehara

Dr. Tetsuo Takehara is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine Japan. He graduated from Osaka University Medical School in 1984 and received clinical training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Osaka University Hospital and its affiliated hospitals for several years. He obtained his Ph.D. in Medicine at Osaka University in 1993, and went on to study as a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard
Medical School, Division of Gastroenterology, Boston, MA, from 1998 to 2000.
Dr. Takehara is a physician scientist in hepatology and gastroenterology and his major research interests include, basic research on cell death and innate immunity and, clinically, viral and non-viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Currently, he studies the mechanistic links between hepatocyte apoptosis/autophagy and the progression of liver disease to fibrosis and cancer. He also studies HBV/HCV virology and anti-viral strategies using a sophisticated mouse model with a humanized liver. He directs and oversees the Osaka Liver Forum (OLF) study, a large and comprehensive cohort study of hepatitis B/C and HCC patients at Osaka University Hospital and more than 30 of its affiliated hospitals in the Kansai area. For example, the OLF study includes more than 5,000 patients being treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin and more than 1,500 patients treated with direct-acting antiviral combination therapies. His work has demonstrated a wide range of clinical evidence among this cohort for the management of patients with viral hepatitis and HCC. He has published more than 300 basic science and clinical articles in high-quality journals.
Currently, Dr. Takehara is the director of the Japan Society of Hepatology and has been the Editor-in Chief of Hepatology Research since 2014.



Dr. Atsushi Tanaka

Prof. Atsushi Tanaka was graduated with M.D. degree in 1988 from the University of Tokyo, Japan. After spending three years as residency at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo, he started his career as a researcher in liver diseases with a main focus on autoimmune liver diseases and viral hepatitis. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo in 1996, and thereafter he stayed at the University of California, Davis since 1996 to 1999 as a visiting scholar with M. Eric Gershwin, M.D., where he elucidated T cell mechanisms
involved in the pathogenesis and progression of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC).
Coming back to Japan in 2000, he rose through the academic ranks to become a Professor of Medicine at the Teikyo University School of Medicine in 2011. His area of expertise is autoimmune liver diseases, especially PBC, PSC and AIH. He has authored 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts devoted to these topics. In addition, he was Co-Director (along with Prof. Xiong Ma from China) of the first APASL satellite symposium on the epidemiology and treatment of AIH and PBC in the Asian-Pacific region, which was held during the 2016 APASL meeting. He has provided exceptional leadership to Japanese hepatology, including ongoing service as Secretary-General of the Drafting Committee for Hepatitis Management Guidelines of the Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH) and play a central role in publishing as well as revising the JSH Guidelines for the Management of HBV/HCV infection. Currently he also serves as a Secretary-General of the Intractable Hepatobiliary Disease Study Group supported by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan, and is one of the leaders for research of autoimmune liver diseases in Japan.

Dr. Yoshiyuki Ueno

Professor Yoshiyuki Ueno is currently Professor of Medicine, Head of Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Vice Director of Yamagata University Hospital. He is the course director of PhD course in Gastroenterology, Postgraduate School of Medicine Yamagata University. Professor Ueno has been engaged in the field of Hepatology since after his graduation of medical school at Tohoku University in 1987. After obtaining PhD degree in 1991, he had been a research fellow at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. Since after his return to
Japan, he continues to work as an academic researcher. Currently, he is an associate editor of Hepatology Research, Hepatology International, and Seminars in Liver Diseases. He has been actively involved in more than 20 international trials on antiviral treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C. He is one of the AASLD inaugural Fellow, and first Japanese hepatologist to become both AASLD and AGA Fellow. He has been involved in several steering committees of academic societies. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers in international journals including 2 in PNAS, 9 in Gastroenterology, 22 in Hepatology, 3 in J Hepatol, 22 in AJP.



Dr. Takaji Wakita

Takaji Wakita received his medical degree in 1983 from Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan. He was then trained in the clinic for 5 years. He obtained his PhD in Internal Medicine III at Nagoya University in 1992 for a thesis entitled "Detection of pre-C and core region mutants of hepatitis B virus in chronic hepatitis B carriers". He received postdoctoral training at Molecular Hepatology Laboratory (Dr. Jack Wands' Lab), Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Boston between 1992 and 1995, work commenced on antisense
inhibition of hepatitis C virus. In 1995, he moved to Department of Microbiology, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science, Tokyo, Japan, and then moved to Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Neuroscience as a Principal Investigator in 1998. In 2006, he moved to National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, Japan, and was appointed as a Director of Department of Virology II. In 2015, he was appointed as a Deputy Director-General of National Institute of Infectious Diseases. His major research interests include; Infection and replication models of hepatitis C virus, Pathogenesis of hepatitis viruses, and Novel therapeutics and vaccine development for hepatitis virus infections. He received Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Medical Award in 2008, and Oda Prize (awarded by the Japanese Society of Hepatology) in 2009.

Dr. Shuichiro Shiina

Shuichiro Shiina graduated in Medicine at the University of Tokyo in 1982. He completed a residency and fellowship training at the University of Tokyo Hospital and Mitsui Memorial Hospital. He received Ph.D. degree in Medical Science with a study “A randomized controlled trial of radiofrequency ablation with ethanol injection for small hepatocellular carcinoma” at the University of Tokyo in 2005. He moved to Juntendo University in December 2012.
Dr. Shiina has been a pioneer of image-guided percutaneous ablation therapies for liver tumors, such as percutaneous ethanol injection, microwave ablation, and radiofrequency ablation. He has performed radiofrequency ablation on over 10,000 patients with liver tumors.
Dr. Shiina published over 200 international scientific papers in high quality English Journal and over 300 domestic scientific papers. Atsumasa Komori is a staff hepatologist, and the Director of Department of Treatment for Intractable Disease in Clinical Research Center, National Hospital Organization Nagasaki Medical Center, Japan. After graduation of Kyushu University School of Medicine, followed by the training in the field of cancer research at National Cancer Center/Saitama Cancer Center and of basic immunology at Weill Medical School of Cornell University, USA, his research
interest is now focused to autoimmune liver diseases, as well as to hepatocarcinogenesis. He is also the chief of Division of International Medical Cooperation in Nagasaki Medical Center, whose recent clinical activity in the Republic of Kazakhstan was awarded as an honorary professor of Kazakhstan National Medical University. He is a board certified hepatologist and member of the board of trustees of the Japan Society of Hepatology.
